Dazed and disorientated, I looked up from the bright red blood pulsing out of my arm - and into the fevered eyes of the six suddenly ravenous vampires. For Bella Swan, there is one thing more precious than life itself: Edward Cullen. It's just as well she feels that way, for loving him will be a deadly game... Edward has already rescued Bella from the clutches of an evil vampire. But now, as their taboo relationship threatens all that is near and dear to them, their true troubles are only just beginning... The second tale of blood, passion and love that defies all boundaries in Stephenie Meyer's hypnotic 'Twilight' saga.

Review from the older audience5
I am in my late 30s and read Twilight because I had heard good things and the hype of the movie was good. I enjoyed it immensely and was drawn in by the love story and taken back to my high school days. I became a bit pathetic and moped around for a few days when I had finished the book...simply because I wanted to read more.

Wanting more and itching to read New Moon, I logged on to Amazon and read the reviews and became a little worried as so many people gave it mediocre to poor reviews. However, I decided just to buy it and read it and I am so glad I did.

I found that it is a much better written book than Twilight. It seemed like Stephenie Meyer actually THOUGHT about what she was writing this time, and didn't just throw stuff on the pages randomly.

The compaint other reviews had was the lack of Edward in the story. However, I did not find this a drawback in the least, it was necessary to keep the emotions running as strongly as they do in this book, and I found the storyline excellent. Please do not be put off by the negative reviews - this book is well worth the read.

A big build up falls flat in this 500 page introduction **possible spoilers**2
As I said in my review of Twilight, I'm 26 so a bit older than the target audience for this series. Vaguely intrigued by the first book I bought the other three and I've just finished New Moon and it was pretty underwhelming.

The basic plot this time has Bella trying to get over Edward after he leaves, saying he doesn't want her anymore. She has a blooming friendship with Jacob and starts clinging to him just as much as she did to Edward before he starts being aloof with her and she doesn't know why. I guess a real teenage relationship would be like this but I really thought Bella just happened to be around the story rather than in it. Jacob and Edward, despite only appearing at the start and end, were fleshed out far more than the so called heroine was. And therein lies my biggest bug about this novel. She tries to do something to break herself out of her mood and she's doing it because she thinks risking her life will bring Edward closer. But in around two thirds of the book she's either trying to kill herself so she can hear him in her head or she's catatonic. Jacob, the wolves and the other vampires end up being far more interesting. In fact if the book had been written from his point of view rather than Bella's it could have been pretty good.

As in the first novel things get interesting around three quarters of the way through but there was even more of a let down than in the first one because all the build up comes to pretty much nothing. It feels like an introduction to the next book rather than a book in itself with several plot lines started but not resolved. We hear about Victoria but don't see her, we find out about the wolves but their mission isn't even close to finished, we find out about the vampire version of the royal family and how powerful and scary they are but barely scratch the surface. We do find out a few more interesting things about Bella's interaction with the vampires' extra powers but even that seems to happen around Bella rather than to her.

All in all I've read worse but this felt like an extended prologue rather than a separate book in its own right. And in my opinion the central character in a series of novels should be involved in the action, not just happen to be there when other people do things.

In a word, a mess...2
I liked Twilight, I would give it 4 stars, although there are some dull parts and too much Edward's sniffs. I was looking forward to seeing how the story would develop in the second book... A disappointment.

I think it would have been better if Meyer stuck to the vampire stuff alone in this book to make it more solid. Twilight was just a beginning, just about the Cullens and their story, with mention of Italy as the vampire royalty and bad ones like Vicotria. Meyer should have developed only those in the second book, with mention of werewolf stuff here and there. And maybe in the third book the werewolf stuff would have added another dimension to the whole thing. Now there are the Volterri, Victoria, werewolf, have I missed anyone ? It's a mess!

I have to say that I found Bella's character getting more and more irritating. She is clumsy and plain, but even the Volterri's ability (Jane's) doesn't work over her. what's that? Meyer should explain some kind of clue or cause that Bella is somehow so special in the vampire world. I could accpet that Bella's smell happens to be very special to Edward, because it's not something that can be explained, but casting Bella as someone so so special even to the powerful vampires like the Volterri with no possible reason is just ridiculous.

Another thing that makes Bella annoying is how she reacts to the dangers she encounters. You would normally need a therapist or someone after you had a near death experience even once, because you may suffer from post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). But Bella if fine and even claims herself to be a 'danger magnet.' Apparently she does not understand the seriousness of all the incidents. Is she too stupid or what? That just makes the story so light and silly and brings it down to an child's play level.

Also, as other reviewer was saying, I don't understand why she can't marry Edward, when she is in love with him so much that she even wants to become a vampire herself. How can marrying him be a much more complicated issue for her, compared to leaving her parents and all other things in human world?? It just doesn't make sense.

It's sad, really. I wanted to like the book. I wasn't expecting much. But there are so so many things I just can't swallow in this book. Well I hope things get better in the third book. I hear nice things about it.
